(BY TELEGRAPH.) (PER PEEAS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. December 10. The Talune, from Sydney, passed the Farewell Spit at 10 a m. and is due here about 7 o'clock to-night. December 19. Captain Edwin says that there are now well defined evidences of hard sales from the northward, with rain, in most parts of the country, between midniaht on the 20th and noon on the 23rd instant. In reply to applications for assessment of values under the Laud and Income Assessment Act of last session the Commissioner of Taxes states that by the -31 st January a complete copy of the valuation will be sent to each taxpayer of his or her assessment. Under the same cover will be forwarded a form for a new return, with full instructions as to the_ requirements under the Act, the objection form, and a copy of how taxpayers are assessed at present. Objection to an assessment must be lodged by Ist March, and, if necessary, the board will meet in April to consider objections. In cases where there is no objection the return need not be lodged until Ist May. In the Bankruptcy Court A. J. Kirk, of Hawera, who attempted to abscond from the colony without paying his creditors and was sentenced to a term of imprisonment, applied for his discharge. Judge Richmond said that though bankrupt had been punished for breach of the Act he thought he must take cognizance of his conduct. The application was refused and Kirk informed that he could renew it after Ist October next. DUNEDIN. December 19. At the mayoral installation, Mr Fish said that if his conversion proved a success he saw his way to propose a drainage scheme and the establishment of a public library without entailing much additional taxation. He proposes to proceed with the erection of the city abattoirs immediately and equalise the charges for lighting and heating. AUCKLAND. December 18. The insurance business is becoming a fine art. At a meeting of the Auckland College and Grammar School, the Property Committee reported having accepted the tender of the South British Company (Li 19s) for the insurance on the school building, in Symonds-street, and contents for L7OOO, and other property for L 6915. The other tenders were r National Insurance Society, L4l 14s 4d ; New Zealand Insurance Company, L 25 17s 6d : United Office, L 24 los 6d ; Pheenix Company, L 23 Is 9d. It was decided to confirm the action of the committee. The tender of the Standard Fire and Marine Insurance Company to guarantee the treasurer at los per cent, per annum was accepted. Last year the rate nas 30s per cent. At the Onehunga Borough Council Mrs Elizabeth Yates presided for the last time last evening. During the debate upon the late election of mayor, which resulted in the return of Mr Sutherland, her Worship remarked that a number of big boys were in the room, and it would be better for them to be in bed. The hint was taken, and they retired. INYERCARGILL. December 19. The overdue Anna, which has arrived at the Bluff from the Campbell Islands brings 400 sealskins. BLUFF. December 19. The ketch Anna, which it was feared was lost, arrived here last night from a sealing cruise to the Auckland and Campbell Islands. She brings back her party from the Campbells, but owing to rough weather had to leave the Auckland Islands party there. The Hinemoa will probably proceed there to-day to bring them back.
