Our Otiakc correspondent writes :—The crops in the district are looking remarkably well, especially wheat and barley. Oats are not so good in most; cases anil the straw will be very short, but a good shower would help them a good deal. The few acres down in barley arc a splendid crop, and with good weather will be ready for cutting in aliout two or three weeks. Wheat has had splendid weather while in bloom and is filling well—a great difference to last year, when half the ears did not iill on account of the wet and cold weather. Feed is not overplentiful, but that has more to do with overstocking than the want of growth. An advertisement appears elsewhere notifying the train arrangements for Christmas. The installation ceremony of the R. W.M. and officers of Lodge Kilwinning will take place at 7.30 to-morrow evening. A supper will be held subsequently in the ante-room. Tickets can be obtained from otlicers of tho Lodge. The Rev. R. S. Allan, having now ceased his connection with £t. Paul's is a delinite candidate for the vacancy in that church caused by the rc'iremont of the Rev. Mr Todd. Mr Allan will command a large measure of support from the congregation, his assistant ministry in the church lor tho last few years having afforded ample opportunity to gauge his earnestness of purpose and ability. His selection to fill the vacancy would be a wise application of the adage that " A bird in the hand is worth two iu the bush." At the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Major Keddell, S.M., the following civil case was heard :—M 'Galium and Co. v. John M'Konzie, claim Lll7 10s 6d. Judgment by consent for amount claimed with costs L2. At a meeting of the active members of St. Paul's C. E. Society it was unanimously resolved to hold their next meeting on Christmas morning instead of Monday evening. The hour of meeting was fixed for 9 o'clock. Suitable addresses will be given and it is hoped there will be a largo attendance. It will be seen from ail advertisement elsewhere that an important clearing sale of Mr Dooley's blood stock will be held at Waimate on Friday next, by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. A glance at the lines offered will show sporting men and breeders that some really good stock is to be sold. The thoroughbred entire First Lord (Fallacy—Albany) heads the list, and, as there arc few good blood sires in this district it might be good speculation to purchase this consistent horse for stud purposes. The brood mares are a good lot, including Quickstep (a full sister to the flying Wakawatca, reckoned the champion sprinter of Australasia), Moth (a half-sister to Outpost), a Betrayer mare, and three mares by St. George, including that consistent and game little marc Miss George, wellknown in this district. 'I lie young stock comprise yearling- , two-year-olds, and three-year-olds, by First Lord out of most of the mares named, and this should prove a firstrate chance of picking up a racehorse, not a patched-up teeing hack, at a cheap price. The five-year-old gelding First King (Deceitful—Betrayer) is also on offer. In addition to the blood stock, a number of sheep and a quantity of station requisites will also be offered. The sale will begin at 12 o'clock promptly at the homestead, and luncheon will be provided. At the Ohristchurch wool sales 15,302 bales were offered, of which 7845 were sold. The usual weekly Executive meeting of the New Zealand Workers' Union was held at the head ollice, Waimate, on Saturday evening, Mr Brown being in tho chair. Correspondence was read from Mr W. After dealing with a mass of correspondence from vurious stations the meeting ended. Keep your eye on Clayton, Gardiner and G'o.'s advertisement in the right-hand top corner of the third page. It changes often. [Advt.]
