(by telegraph.) (per press association.) WELLINGTON. September 13. The schooner Frank Guy, from Newcastle, arrived this afternoon. Captain Macquarrie reports leaving Newcastle on the 25th August. On September Ist she experienced a heavy gale, which increased in fury, and for three days the vessel was hove to and the rudder carried away in the rudder case. This was 500 miles from Wellington. They rigged a temporary rudder with hawsers, but it was of little avail, and as the wind was fair the schooner sailed on by herself. Within 70 miles of Cape Farewell, the wind veered, and a difficulty was experienced in putting the vessel about, and she labored heavily, but oil proved of great benefit. Eventually another jury rudder with success was rigged and port reached. Next sitting of the Court of Appeal will be held at Wellington on October 15 th. The Gazette notifies the issue of Imperial volunteer officers' decorations to Lieut.-Colonel Pitt, Nelson, 23 years 102 days' service ; Lieut.-Colonel, Hon. J. A. Bonar, Westland, 26 years 124 days ; and Major Henry Slater, unattached active list IS ew Zealand volunteers, 24 years 129 days. The municipal elections created but little interest, and resulted as follows : Thorndon Ward, J. Myers ; Lambton Ward, C. E. Williston (re-elected); Te Aro Ward, W. P. Barbor (re-elected). A deputation waited this afternoon upon the Premier to urge the remission of the sentence on Keri Kaihau. Mr Hone Heke said that the offence had been committed under the influence of Tawhaio, and there was no danger of a repetition. The Premier said he could not recommend a remission. Keri had been twice previously convicted and released on promise of good behavior, ihe Premier said he had heard from Tawhaio himself that Keri had acted on his own responsibility. DUNEDIN. September 12. The contest in the two wards of the city excited considerable interest. Councillor M'Gregor defeated A. H. Burton by a majority of 134 for High Ward. A. Morrison was elected for Bell Ward, polling 165 more than A. S. Adams. Two young men named Caygill went out in a boat this morning. As there was a good sea on and a stiff wind they found themselves unable to return, and as the boat was leaking and shipping water they made fast to one of the beacons and landed' on it. The painter broke, and the boat went away. After beiug about three hours on the beacon the men were observed by Mrs Scobie Mackenzie on the other side of the Bay, and she telephoned to the police, who rescued the men in on almost benumbed condition. CHRISTCHURCH. September 13. Mrs Moore, wife of R. Moore, formerly M.H.R. for Kaiapoi, and an arrival by one of the first four ships, died <-o-day. The General Committee of the A. and P. Association have decided to recommend that the duty on imported binder twine should be abolished. AUCKLAND. September 13. At the criminal sessions of the Supreme Court Frederick Frewin was acquitted on a charge of receiving stolen goods. Justice Connelly said the verdict was an extraordinary one, but it was the act of the jury, and not his. Beard's case, a charge of manslaughter, commences tomorrow. The Northern Boot and Shoe Company have declared a dividend of 5 per cent. At the inquest on John Win. Young, chief officer of the Mary Halsbrook, t.ie post mortem showed that death resulted from hemorrhage from a tubercular cavity in the left lung. At the municipal elections Mrs Matson was returned for the borough of Parnell by 90 of a majority. For Grafton Ward of the City W. B. Whyte was returned, Mrs Endean being defeated.
