Tho new Land Bill gives the Government power to withdraw from pastoral lease any land required for settlement, the area withdrawn not to be less than one-eighth or more than one half of the total holding ; lessees to be compensated by the extension of lease and a proportionate reduction in rent; homestead leases to have a currency of 28 years. The Bill provides for the extension of the homestead system, with stringent residential conditions, bub enables the Crown to acquire large estates which may be retarding the progress of settlement. Received September 14, at 11.50 a. in ] Melbourne, September 14. The Judge summed up strongly in favor of Syme. He said that there was not a tittle of evidence of personal malice. Public men lived in an atmosphere of criticism and should be prepared to take their gruel. The plaintiff Speight had only a general claim for damages to credit and reputation, and even if the jury found on all issues damages should be moderate. Hobart, September 14. The Chamber of Commerce is urging the Government to negotiate with the Premier of New South Walos for free exchange of the natural products of the two colonies. The president advocated a conference of Australian Chambers on the subject of a Customs Union during the Exhibition at Hobart.
