The vietbry of the locally owned filly M oily Darling at Timaru yesterday was the cause of much lejoieing among local sportsmen who had backed her with the books at starting price. When it was officially announced that she had run absolutely unbacked on the machine the rejoicing waß turned to dismay. The sixth annual meeting of the Oamaru Cricket Club will be held in the Rahanga Rooms to-morrow night at 7.30. A large attendance of members is requested. The cantata " The Pilgrim Fathers " will be given at Kakanui to-night by the Wesley Church choir. " The polling for the election of a Councillor for Severn Ward took place yesterday when Mr John M'Dowell was returned by 83 votes as against Mr W. H. Frith's 32. St Paul's choir will give the cantata " Daniel" in the Wear-street Hall to-night at 8 o'clock. A meeting of ladies interested in the forth' coming Naval Band bazaar was held in the band hall yesterday, there being a good attendance. Arrangements were made to start a sewing bee every Tuesday, at 2 p.m. Mrs Frew was elected president, and Misbos Gibbs and Lane joint secretaries. At a meeting of Lodge St. Augustine, 576, S.C., Waimate, held on Wednesday night last, it was decided, by a large majority, to join the New Zealand Grand Lodge. At the election for Councillors held on Thursday last at Waimate the following aro the numbers of votes recorded • —John Cameron 151, Samuel Collctt 104, Robert Inkster 99, John O'Connor 98, and J. R. Clement 48. The first three were declared duly elected. At a meeting of the Papakaio Ploughing Match Committee it was found that sufficient support had been got to warrant the Committee going on with the match. It was decided to hold the match on Thursday 27th September in a paddock at kindly placed at the disposal of the Committee by Mr H. Stewart. The Excelsior Football Club tried conclusions on the Old Cricket Ground yesterday afternoon with a team from St. Patrick's Gymnasium. The former team was captained by Buist and the latter by Power, R. Thomson acting as referee. 'L'hc game resulted in a win for the Excelsiors by a majority of 2 points, the Club scoring 7 to the Gymnasium's 5. The match was a stubbornly contested one, the Gymnasts having the best of the game in the first spell, but owing to their forwards' want of condition and their limited knowledge of the game the Blues kept the ball in their opponents' 25 in the second spell. Maxwell scored a try for the Gymnasium, which he converted. For the Blues Mitchell by a smart piece of play, scored, and Buist later on landed the ball fairly between the posts from a fine pot shot. Hanley, Martin, M'Klheny, and J. Power were undoubtedly the pick of the Colors'forwards, and Ross, Haggie, and Pheloung the most conspicuous of the Excelsior forwards. In the back division Ah Tong and M'Grail (Colors) and M'Culloch and Nightingale (Excelsiors) showed a surprising amount of dash during the game.
