At the election for Councillors held on Thursday last at Waimate the following aro the numbers of votes recorded • —John Cameron 151, Samuel Collctt 104, Robert Inkster 99, John O'Connor 98, and J. R. Clement 48. The first three were declared duly elected. At a meeting of the Papakaio Ploughing Match Committee it was found that sufficient support had been got to warrant the Committee going on with the match. It was decided to hold the match on Thursday 27th September in a paddock at kindly placed at the disposal of the Committee by Mr H. Stewart. The Excelsior Football Club tried conclusions on the Old Cricket Ground yesterday afternoon with a team from St. Patrick's Gymnasium. The former team was captained by Buist and the latter by Power, R. Thomson acting as referee. 'L'hc game resulted in a win for the Excelsiors by a majority of 2 points, the Club scoring 7 to the Gymnasium's 5. The match was a stubbornly contested one, the Gymnasts having the best of the game in the first spell, but owing to their forwards' want of condition and their limited knowledge of the game the Blues kept the ball in their opponents' 25 in the second spell. Maxwell scored a try for the Gymnasium, which he converted. For the Blues Mitchell by a smart piece of play, scored, and Buist later on landed the ball fairly between the posts from a fine pot shot. Hanley, Martin, M'Klheny, and J. Power were undoubtedly the pick of the Colors'forwards, and Ross, Haggie, and Pheloung the most conspicuous of the Excelsior forwards. In the back division Ah Tong and M'Grail (Colors) and M'Culloch and Nightingale (Excelsiors) showed a surprising amount of dash during the game.
