Tawhaio's Funeral.
(I3Y TELEGRAM! ) Auckland, Scptombor 10. A large gathering is taking placo ivt tho tangi over Tawhaio. The actual inter* ment will take place at Taupiri at tho ancestral resting place of the chiefs of Ngatimahuta. There appears, however, to be some uncertainty as to tho day, as the body will be at Maurigakawa to-day. A considerable number of natives is afc present in town, and will leave for Waikato to-day. Mr G. S. Graham intends to be present at the interment, and will take with him a ton of flour, a ton of potatoes, a quantity of tobacco, and other articles which he will present to tho | natives on behalf of his father, Gcorgo I Graham, who was a friend of Tawhaio, i and of liis father, Polatau. One thousand nine hundred Maori people wero at Taw-hub's tangi at Parawera to-dayi and this number will bo further increased by more fresh arrivals that are expected to morrow. The daily consumption of food at the meeting i i bread, potatoes, pork, etc., is, as may well ho supposed, surprisingly largo. The death cf the kin™ coming so closo on that of Rewi, and the consequent largo contributions of food made by hapus to maintain both tangis, is now severely felt by them, and by none more than the natives residing at Parawora and along by tho valley of Puniu. Their resources tu'O well nigh dried up, for, not to speak ot the loss of all their pigs, they have parted with nearly all their potatoes except some small ones which they require for thic season's seed. A wire was received this morning by one of tho principal chiefs from the Government at Welling 0 ' 1 offering to contribute towards tho food supply of the tangi. Tho offer was received and accepted with thanks, an® replied to to that effect. As tho body ox Tawhaio will be removed to-day Maungakawa, where it will bo kept t°' three days, after which it will be rtimoyoa to its last resting placo at Taupiri, t" food so liberally offered by tho Government would be most wolcomo if it wcio readinesß for them when they got tliore.
