Wine for the Stomach's Sake.

(by telegraph.) Wellington, March 30. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Richard Smith was charged with having procured drink for an old couple against whom prohibition orders were issued about two months ago. The evidence showed that the house in which the old people lived was in a filthy state. Dr France said he found that it would be dangerous to stop their liquor absolutely, and therefore he prescribed that they should be allowed alcohol daily, in quantities not to exceed 3s worth per diem between them. The defendant (Smith) swore that he had never exceeded the prescription, but the magistrate said he was not satisfied with the conduct, aud fined him L 5 and costs.
