The Collector of Customs :it Lytteltou has been instructed to hold an inquiry into the circumstances attending the Star of England grounding off Capo Saunders last week. The Tainui arrived at Plymouth on tho 26th inst. from Now Zealand, with her frozen meat in good condition. The Mariposa with tho English mails of the 7th inst, left San Francisco for Auckland on tho 20th, one day late. Tho Monowai, with the colonial mails of tho 7th inst. arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on the 27th, one clay lato. At the half-yearly meeting of the Bank of New South Wales, held in Sydney to-day, a dividend at tho rate of Vl\ per cent, for the year was declared, and a sum of L2O,SG4 carried forward. October 31. Mr Bowell, Canadian Minister, now on a visit to Australia, wires the Premier that he will bo unable to visit New Zealand, but hopes this colony will send i> representative to the conference in Canada on trade matters. Queensland, Now South Wales, and Victoria are in favor of the proposal. DUNEDIN. October 30. The directors of the National Insurance Company report that the profit for the year ending the 30th September, after writing off L 2242 for furniture, stationery, loss on securities realised, etc., and including L 11,207 3s 3d brought forward, to be L2!),565 15s f>d ; from which has to be deducted LGI27 (is lOd interim dividend. They now propose to pay a dividend at the rate of 12h per cent, for the half-year, absorbing L 61.27 6s 10d, and a bonus of 2A per cent., making a total of 15 per cent, for tho year, and to carry forward L14,8(30 3s. There was no insuranco on either tho hull or the cargo of tho ketch Alice Jane, practically wrecked at tho Heads, and Captain Johnston is left without even enough money to pay the crew. At the annual meeting of tho congregation of the First Church, a motion was passed in appreciation of the services of the Rev. Mr Gibb (the pastor), in connection with the Rev. Mr Saunders, to draw attention to prevalent evils, and expressed a hope that as a result steps would be taken to combat these. AUCKLAND. October 30. An exciting bolt took place in town to-day. A pair of horses attached to a landau, owned by Thomas Pollmm, took fright in Taranaki-street, and dashing across the reclaimed land continued their mad career down the Queen's Wharf. When they reached the end of tho wharf the horses fell over a pile of timber and went down between the steamer TaJuno and the structure. The horses and vehicle were not much damaged. Pelham jumped into another express to follow the runaways, but an accident happened to the vehicle, and in jumping out ho had his leg broken. . The fund raised for the relief of tho Baillie family, the victims of tho recent drowning, is attaining very respectable dimensions already, about Ll5O in all being collected in Auckland. The engineer-in-charge and an oflicial party left Auckland to decide as to the period at which the lino can be opened for ordinary passenger traflio as far as the rails are already laid, llicy will, in due course, report to the Railway Commissioners, who will givo their decision in the matter. The party expect to be back on Wednesday. An unusual case of assault was hoard at the Police Court this morning. The defendant, a man named James Wander, struck two men in the passage of an hotel with a slung-shot. In answer to tho Bench the prisoner said he had carried a slung-shot all through the striko in Australia without having used it. llio justices sentenced the man to one month 8 imprisonment with hard labor on each charge, the sentences to run concurrently. AUCKLAND. October 30. The champion cup takers at the Ashburton show were :—Sheep—Max Friedlander, 56 points ; cattle—John Small, 26 points ; horses (all classes)— John Small, 33 points ; draught horses—John Small, 33 points; produce—E. Horsey, 20 points. There were Ll5O in gate money, and the show was tho best ever held. ___ INVERCARGILL. October 30. As a consequence of 32 hours continuous rain between Saturday and early this morning tho rivers are in high flood. Otautau stores and dwellings were awash this forenoon, and tho river is still rising. The Oreti, at Lumsdcn, also overllowcd its banks.
