The Official Receiver in the estate of the Mercantile Bank of Australia has received a cablegram from counsel in Melbourne that Sir M. Da vies and Messrs Bell, Anderson, and Muntz (directors of the Bank), also the auditors, should bo prosecuted for issuing a false balancesheet in February. Counsel also advised that the directors should be proceeded against civilly, as they are liable for the dividend paid. The Receiver states that he must first consult the solicitor and the Committee before any arrests are made or before arranging for Mr F. Milledge (the manager of the Bank) being sent back to Victoria.. The latter states that lie is quite willing to return to the colony instantly to meet an action, as he has 110 fear as to the result. The New Zealand and River Plate Land and Mortgage Agency Company has declared a dividend of six per cent. The profits for the year were L 13,000. The reserve fund has been reduced (?) L 5,000, and L 2500 has been carried forward.

The trial of Hobbs (contractor) and Wright (solicitor) on charges of having fraudulently received the monies of the Liberator Permanent Building Society is creating a sensation.
