A lire was discovered in Sheflield and Company'.'-' large grocery store, in Taystrcet, shortly after midnight, and though piouiptly extinguished, meat, damage was done liy lire and water. The insurance is not available to-day. The special jury awarded May Auhrey Valentino L2o damages in her hreaeh of promise action against Alexander M'lvillop. The. evidence of one witness (NYright) caused a sensat ion. The defence was that M'Killop refused to marry the girl because he discovered that she was immoral, and NVriglit a former lover, was relied upon to prove it. lie however, declined to commit, himself, referring counsel to the girl's alleged letters to him as an answer to ihe cpiestions. At the close of the case, .Judge Williams made the plaintiir go through all the letters said by the defence to have been written by her, and she selected all those in which remarks damaging to her morality occurred as forgeries. Some, she said, contained statements she. had made interpolated with olhers of which she knew nothing. The letters have excited u good ileal of curiosity, as did t.lu; action, the Court being crowded. The plaint ill* created a favorable impression by tl.o straightforward way in which she gave her evidence under cross-examination. Ilcr counsel (Mr Fraser. Duncdin) fairly roasted Wright in his examination and address to the jury.
