The estimate of the visible supply of American wheat is (><>,(500,000 bu.shel.s. The majority of the peaches imported from the Cape were spoiled l>y low .atmosphere. The rest brought from 14 s to 18s per dozen. The nectarines were inferior, and only realised 2s (id per dozen. Grapes were also inferior. They brought 12s per 44lbs. Merchants think even these prices were only reached because Cape fruit is a novelty, and they are not likely to he maintained. Tomatoes fetched 3d per lb. Factory butter is 112s ; dairy, 02s to 100s. Austrian and Italian dairies are sending over large quantities and depressing the marketHeavy sales of colonial stocks are being effected, and there is a general fall of 10s. The issue of Treasury Bills is the chief cause of the depression. Four services in memory of the late Mr Spurgeon were held in the Tabernacle. Canon Fleming, Mr Sankey (the evangelist), the Rev. Mr M'Laren, and many of the leading dissenters were present.. The late Bishop Perry leaves bequests to several charities in Melbourne, and LIOOO each to the Bishops of Melbourne and Ballarat, for church plate. At the half-yearly meeting of the Bank of New Zealand, the Hon. Mr Glyn. chairman, said the deposits had increased and their credit was improving. Prices at the wool sales for crossbreds and fine greasy average are Is 2d lower, coarse scoured remain at par, lambs at par to id higher, merino (greasy superior) par to "id, average id, inferior id to jfd, scoured (aood average) id, inferior Id lower, lambs (greasy superior) id dearer, other sorts -id lower. The market, is steady. It was stated at the Bank of New Zealand meeting that L 20,000 was expected to be carried over to next year. The chairman said the new taxation did not, affect the Bank, though it would considerably affect the Estates Company. The Bank was reducing advances in Australia, believing it to be risky in the present state of affairs there.
