The luncheon and farewell to the Governor have been provisionally postconed till Thursday, as the Governor is Laved in the south by floods. To-day the committee of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association agreed with the Wellington Agricultural and Pastoral Association that a conference cf kindred societies should be held before next show season, with a view to fix dates of shows and arrange other matters. The committee suggests that the conference be held in Christchurch on the 19th of March. AUCKLAND. February 9. The schoolmaster's house at Rotorua has bceu burned. The origin of the fire is unknown. It will be replaced by the Government from a special fund. GISBORNE. February 9. A severe earthquake shock, lasting eiaht seconds, direction east to west, was experience here at 0.36 this morning. NEW PLYMOUTH. February 9. A telegram from Stratford states that a man named Patrick Whelan, a laborer, vrho was working on the Hay ward road, was killed yesterday by a falling tree. A party of eight men left at noon today for Mount Esrmont to fetch Southwood's body to town. They will reach Mountain House, which has just been erected for tourists, and stop there for the night, leaving at daybreak to-inorrow morning to gee the body. Mountain House is 3200 feet above the sea level, aud the place where the body lies is at the top of the mountain, which is 8200 feet. If the weather is favorable the party hope to have the body in town on Thursday, when an inquest will be held. The papers found on the deceased are still in a state of pulp, and it is doubtful | if the writing will ever be deciphered. NAPIER, February 9. A prolonged shock of earthquake occurred at 4.40 a.m., accompanied by loud rumbling. It was the strongest shock that has happened for some time.
