WELLINGTON
October 6. The Government are in receipt of .1 report from Major Gudgeon on the condition of the natives on the East Coast, in which he states that the list so far shows s<> cases of typhoid fever, but it is expected that before it is complete there will be quite JJOO. The cases are principally al*>ut Waiapti. He recommends that a competent medical officer be sent to the district.
DUNEDIN. October 4. Mr Seddon telegraphs that Mr Fish had not the slightest foundation for the statement that he intended to deport the convict Butler to Milford Sound.
CHRISTCHURCH. October 6. A fire broke out early this morning in a workshop near H. R. Webb's house, St. A 1 ban's. The brigade turned out, but. when the steam engines reached the north belt, they stopped and drew their tires. The chemical engines went on, but could not cope with the fire, which spread to a house containing twenty rooms. The engines were then ordered to proceed, but an hour's delay took place, and the result was the destruction of the workshop, and the gutting of all the rooms in the back house. The damage is estimated at LSOO. The house was insured for L 1250 in the United Union office, and the furniture for L7OQ in the Liverpool and London and Globe. It may be stated that the city extinguishing plant is subsidised to attend all fires of the St. Allans borough, and that Webb's house was only about 400 yards over the city boundary.
MASTERTON. October 6. The natives of Wardell township have drawn up a set of rules and regulations for the suppression of the drink traffic and to prevent liquor being brought into their .settlement.

At the Supreme Court session there is only one prisoner 011 trial for three forgeriesof endorsements to bills. He pleaded guilty and was .sentenced to six months' imprisonment on each charge, concurrent. A breach of promise case has been heard which was made peculiar by the absence of the plaintiff, who had arranged to settle for L 25 without reference to Counsel or her next friend, and then left for the North Island. .Judgment was entered for the L 25 offered with costs against defendant. A nisi in divorce was granted to Richard Eirl, whose wife 11111 away with a ship's steward to Sydney in March last. The parties were married in IS7f>. Six children are left with the husband. Two appeals are yet to be heard.
