WELLINGTON.

October 5. By a five at Carterton, the property known as Chew's sawmills, owned by Mr T. Price, was burned down. The plant was valued at L3OO. In the Divorce Court, in the case of Sarah Arnold v. Edward Arnold, the decree nisi was made absolute. Fridcr Hirechberg applied for a dissolution of marriage with George Hirechberg, on the grounds of adultery and desertion. Theie was no appearance of respondent. It was explained that respondent had been served in San Francisco. The petitioner showed that she was married by the Registrar in Wellington in 1881, respondent being a clerk in Messrs Krull and Co.'s employ. DUNEDIN October 5. A branch of the New Zealand Journalists' Institute has been formed here, MiMark Cohen being appointed Chairman He is ex officio a member of the Council of the Institute. Mr J. AUCKLAND. October 5. The Master Bakers' Association have resolved to raise the price of bread from 3d to 3id per 2-lb loaf. A programme of athletic sports was carried out at Potter's Grounds, Epsom, to raise funds to send an athletic team to England, and was attended by nearly a thousand people. A football tournament was won by the Ponsonby Club s team. A whale, thirty-two feet long, was seen in the harbor, and after a chase was run aground at Point Chevalier, where it diied. A mile race, for L2O a side, between i. Wilson and the well-known athlete S. Goodman, was won by the latter by about six yards. Time —4mins 48secs. At the request of several electors, Mr W. A. Murray telegraphed to the railway authorities asking tliem to grant facilities to railway employees to vote at the Waikato election, which will take place to-morrow. A reply was received that the request has been acceded to. At a meeting of the Committee appointed at the recent meeting which was held to consider the formation of a Railway League, the planks of the League were announed to be to stop the further diversion of the Northern Trunk Railway loan, to insist upon the immediate expenditure of L 65,000 upon the Stratford line, and the communication between Auckland and Taranaki by that route. The completion of the Rotorua railway was also to be urged upon the Government.

INVERCARGILL. October 5. Mr Kelly, M.H.R., addressed a meeting of 600 electors to-night, and received a vote of confidence without dissent.
