It is stated that an immense improvement has recently been effected in tho manufacture of glass for optical instruments by means of the addition to tho ordinary materials of phosphorus and chlorine, which in some as yet unexplained way cause the glass to be very much more transparent, and enable it to receive a much higher degree of polish than any optical glass hitherto manufactured. Thus microscopes can be niado which will render objects of the diameter of only one-eighth millionth of a millimetre visible, whereas with the best instruments now in use the diamoter of tlio smallest object that can bo seen is onesixteenth thousandth of a millimetre.— Lancet.
