Oamarc Mail Office, Saturday afternoon. The market this -week is somewhat fiat, anA there is an absence of life and a general stagnation apparent, which is, however, not unusual at this period of the year. The wheat market is slacker owing to cable advices front Home. The uncertainty of the znarket tends to prevent transactions of any magnitude. Nobody seems quite snre of what the next development will lie, and contradictory reports of the European harvest tend to add to the general uncertainty. The inquiry this week is not so brisk as it has been, and few transactions are recorded Prices remain as last week, the slackening being more noticeable in a lessened inquiry than a fall in the absolute money values. Oats are as dull as the proverbial ditch water. This is partially owing to the healthy prospect of the Australian harvest, consequent opon a good spring and the quantity of maize available on the other side. There are also, we understand, a large qnantity of Southland oats in hand, which tends to prevent a rise in values. Barley is merely nominal. Potatoes are a trifle firmer, but our opinion as regards their future remains unaltered. We would draw the attention of growers to a paragraph published this week is our columns anent the condition in which they are ptaced upon the Australian market. Grading and sorting are essential to good sales. Other things remain unaltered. We quote":— Wheat—Prime Tuscan. 4s id to 4s 3d ; velvet, 4s to 4s Id; Motd's Ennobled, 4s Id : red straw, 4s. Oats—Prime short, Is -3d ; Danish, Is 2d to Is 3d ; Tartars, 13 3d. Barley—2s 3d to 2a (id, quotations nominal ; feed, Is 6<l to 2s. Potatoes Prime Derwents, 22s Gd at sidings. Dairy Produce—Butter, 8d to lOd ; eggs, 10d ; pork, 3d to 3_£d, heads and feet off. CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE The following is the Corn Exchange report (per N. P. Meyers, secretary) for the week ending Friday, July 10th. IS9l: The wheat market during the past week •continues firm, although European advices are not encouraging. Any good sized parcels offering command attention, more especially for local consumption. Prime milling oats are also in request, whilst long and feed are firm at quotations. In barley few transactions have transpired, except for prime malting, which finds a ready market. Beans and Peas—For the former there are several inquiries, when not broken, while the latter have been placed at figures below. For handthreshed Prussian blues there is a fair demand. Grass Seed—lnquiries for rye and cocksfoot may be noted at quotations. Potatoes —Derwents have seen fair sales, bnt the seller must guarantee them marketable, and no second growth, otherwise there is the possibility of them being rejected at the ship's side. News from New Sonth Wales tends to show that the market there has a ■light npward tendency, and we trust those who have shipped will benefit thereby. No alteration can be noted in dairy produce. Our quotations are as follow : Wheat—Prime milling Tuscan, 4s 3d to 4s 4d : Pearl, 4s 2d to 4s 3d ; Hunter's, 4s to 4s 2d.
