In Wanganui, the local educational authorities cannot get tradesmen to perform the work they want done in certain portions of the district. Oil two separate occasions tenders have been called for publicly for the erection of a schoolhouso at Peniberton and Apiti, but not a solitary tender has been received. The New Zealand Times states that under the village settlement system people have done well who have had neither money nor agricultural knowledge—who had nothing in fact but brains and hearts. It strongly urges the wharf men who cannot get. work to turn their backs upon the city and make for the interior. A very sad case is reported from Birkenhead. A settler named Wernham died rather suddenly, leaving a widow and family, and the widow has since lost hor reason, leaving the children, some of whom are very young, unprovided for. The Committee of' the Birkenhead and Northcote Fruitgrowers' Association, in view of these circumstances, formed a working bee, and on Saturday last from 20 to 30 settlers prepared about half an acre of land and planted 12,000 strawberry plants for the bereaved family.— Auckland Star. The Marlborough Times says "We believe that a wrong has been done Mr Edwards, but it was done him by the previous Government, and in the teeth of the opinion of those who now hold office. Times have changed, and now the Conservative Press finds abuse tlio best weapon to hand.
