Tlie following appeal. which lias been numerously signed by Invercargdl women, Fiji* been ptaced in the hands of each member of the licensing committee in the hope that it might have some weight in determining the result of the implications for licenses at Monthly's meeting. Those signing the- petition are- aware th.it it has n<> leg Til v;»ltt>-\ hut feet that they must do what little lies in their power for the restriction of the liquor traffic in order to protect their home* front the evils it everywhere brings i- We, the undersigned women of fnvere.-irgilt. respectfully beg, that in deriding upon the applications which wilt he brought before yon. you wilt consider not only the interests of the proponed licensee but also theweffareof the inhabitants of the district. We understand that you have been elected with the avowed intention of granting 11 »»clock licenses tf» all so-called * well-conducted houses,' bat knowing as we do that such extension of time is in every way prejudicial to the comfort of ottr homes and the well-being of ottr children, we urge jrott to close all houses at the earliest hour allowed by taw, and in no ease to allow extension of time to those houses known to be frequented by the young. It is well known that the increased facilities for obtaining drink mean an increased amount of drunkenness, and as the effects of this vice fall moist heavily on women and children, we make this appeal to you, in whose hr&nds the power has been placed, in the h">pe that yott will greatly reduce the number of these places of temptation and thus secure the earnest thanks of many Invercargtll wives and mothers."— Southland Times.
