INTERPROVINCIAL NEWS.

(by telegraph.) (per press association.) WELLINGTON. June 7. A special meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association was held last night, when 20 out of the 25 clubs belonging to the Association were represented by delegates. The nomination of the Waitara Rowing Club was accepted, and tho election of the W'aitemata Boating Club (Auckland) as a member of the Association was confirmed. A proposition that the headquarters of the Association be periodically moved to the principal centres of the colony was lost. Mr Henderson, the delegate of the Auckland Rowing Club, moved, " That an inrigged four-oared championship be allotted next season for competition amongst, tho affiliated clubs. 1 ' This evoked considerable discussion during the meeting. It w r as contended chat the function of the Association was to foster rowing in the best boats, and this would be frustrated if a champion race were constituted for inrigged four-oar boats, which were fast becoming obsolete. The voting was 22 for and 10 against, but the chairman ruled that as the majority was not a twothirds one the proposition had not been carried. By a fire last night- a house in Tinakori Road was destroyed by tire. The property, which was unoccupied, was owned by Mrs T. Young. It was uninsured, and had been on fire oil two occasions last, week. Nothing is at present known of the origin, and it is attributed to larrikins. The City Council, having decided to refer the competitive designs for a free library to a committee outside of the Council, have requested Mr Justice Richmond and Messrs Fergusson (Engineer of Harbor Board) and Wiltshire (City Surveyor), to undertake the selection. Mr Justice Richmond, who has just resumed his place on tho Bench after a lengthened leave of absence, declined to act, explaining that he had not time at his disposal. It is understood that the Council have asked the Hon. E. Richardson, formerly Minister for Public Works, to act v.'ith Messrs Fergusson and Wiltshire, and it is believed he will consent. The annual meeting of the Wellington Branch of the Post and Telegraph Officers Society was held last night. The report and balance-sheet showed the Society to -be in a highly flourishing position, and the roll membership now numbered 102. The chairman, secretary, treasurer, auditor, and trustees were re-elected. The Minister for Public Works returned from the South this afternoon. HOKITIKA. June 7.
