COMMERCIAL.

** Oamakc Mail Office. ; 1 Saturday afternoon. *5 Wheat holds its price at quotations thi3 j 1 week, and though there has not been much ' business transacted outright, ami lint few lots p, have ehanged hands still the enquiry iB good and prices show no inclination to re- % cede rather the contrary. Sellers do not care to sell nor buyers to buy at present prices, both parties being a little bit afraid to speculate. There is not much outside demand for the cereal, and millers seem to be fairly well stocked for some montlis to J, come. Oats are dull of sale. There are very few good samples forward, and inferior, of which there are plenty, arc practically unsaleable. Barley is quite a dead letter. Only the very best samples arc .looked at, and as there is very little prime malting in the district, buyers are purchasing outside, and local business is consequently restricted. For potatoes there is no demand, and no sates are recorded. Merchants have had lots thrown upon their hands, and do not care to operate even at ' the low figure of 20s at sidings, which is t the best price obtainable. There seeni3 to be little hope of their improving, on account of the great surplns of the tuber in north and south Canterbury. Chaff is in poer demand. Batter aud eggs are cheaper, feed being more plentiful.
