(BY TELEGRAPH.) (PER I'RKSS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. May 19. The R.M.S. Kaikoura, from London, via way ports, arrived this afternoon. The R.M.S. Kaikoura left Plymouth on the sth of April; Teuerifi'e, on the 10th ; Capetown, on the 25th ; and Hobart at 1.20 p.m. on the 15th instant. She experienced variable weather throughout, and from the 7th to the 13th instant had a dense fog. The time occupied on the voyage was 43 days hours. Iho actual steaming time was 42 days 21 i hours. Sailed Glenlora, barque, Captain Tonkin, for London. Ministers were in Cabinet for several hours to-day considering their financial proposals, but the result of their deliberations was not made known. The Policy Bills of the Government are in a forward state of preparation, and will be circulated almost immediately upon Parliament meeting. The Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Bill, to be introduced next session by the Minister of Justice, is not out of the printers's hands, but it is expected to be ready for circulation about the end of the week. So great has been the demand for copies of the measure that a fresh issue has been ordered from tho Government printer. JDUNEDIN. May 19. A private meeting of the city licensing committee was held to-day. It is understood that the police reported that in a number of houses only the liquor traffic was carried on, while in some prostitutes were allowed to assemble. The names of some 16 hotels are montioned in this 'connection, and it is said tho advisability of withdrawing the licenses of many of these will be considered at the annual meeting. CHRISTCHURCH. May 19. To-day the publicans of Sydenham lodged a statement of claim in the Supreme Court praying that the Licensing Committee be unseated as the election was void through the returning officer not being legally appointed, or may be restrained from acting, because before the election they agreed with certain voters that if elected they would refuse all licenses. The case is set down for May 27tli. TIMARU. May 19. A meeting was held to-night in the Assembly Rooms to consider the licensing question. The Mayor presided, and the place was crowded. The following resolutions were passed: —"That the time has come when an effort should be made to rid the community of the evil of the drink traffic, and that the re-election of the present committee would mean a continuation of the evil, and also that they pledge themselves to support the candidates who will carry out the reforms required.
