A private letter from Bourke, New South Wales, informs us that a young man namcil Charles Maodonald, late of Timaru, died there recently, of diptlieria. He took the disease on a Monday and died on the following Friday. We believe that a brother of the deceased man is a butcher, residing in Timaru, and we publish this information in order that he and other persons interested may be made aware of the occurrence. The following team from the Excelsior Football Club will play all-comers 011 the North Road ground to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Backs—Foss, Meredith, Heron (2), Hinton, Hastie. Forwards—Ogilvic, Emerson, Wylie, Familton, Jack, M'Taggart, Huia (2), Robins, Crawshaw. The following householders were elected on the Whare-Kuri School Committee: — Messrs N. Bain, William M'Caughtrie, I). Aubray, J. Stewart, W. Gard (treasurer), John Collins (secretary), and Thomas Anderson (chairman). A match between the first fifteens of the Athletic and Excelsior Football Clubs will be played on the North Road Ground to'morrow afternoon. As this is the first time the Excelsior Club, which has only recently been constituted a senior club, lias been pitted against either of the other senior clubs of the town, considerable interest is centred in the match. We understand that the Clara Merivale Opera Company which was announced to appear at JJunedin next week, and about which many conflicting rumors have been circulating, will open in Christehurch in the first week in November. Mr Hannington, a brother of the late bishop of that name, who was murdered ill Africa, delivered an interesting lecture last night in St. Paul's Church. The Rev. A. B. Todd occupied the chair and briefly introduced the lecturer, who gave a discursive and chatty discourse on Palestine and the Jews. As Mr Hannington has travelled from Lebanon to Jerusalem, he is, of course, specially qualified to speak on all matters pertaining to the scriptural country, and his lecture was replete with interest and instruction.
