In giving his decision in the case brought by the police agalost Annie Anderson, charged with the larceny of certain goods from Clayton and Gardiner's shop, bis Worship said ho had decided not to imprison the accused, but woold inflict a fine of 30i, and order the payment of 12i 6d, the value of the articles stolen, in default five days' imprisonment. He had decided on this course In the hope that the accused would take care to refrain from similar acts. Mr Harvey appeared for the accused. FAIAISG TO OBET. Jane Simpson, for whom Mr Butt appeared, charged ber husband with failiog to obey an order for the payment of money towards the maintenance of hor and her children. His Worship arid be had let the defendant eff on three different occasions, and wis gattiog tired of bis actions, and woold have to send bim to prison. A sentence of 14 d»ya' imprisonment with bard labor was inflicted. .ASSAULT WITH ISTEST TO 808. William Cromble was charged on remand with assaulting and attempting to rob D. M'Gillvary. lospector Thompson conducted the proration, Mr Butt representing accused. Jane Liwson said she was in bed on the night of the 19: h when she heard cries of " murder," and on dressing and going outside, she saw two men. She asked tbem wbat they were doing, when Blsck said that Cromble was going to give him " a doing." She saw Black take hold of Cromble. The men made appear as If they were larking, and witoeas said, "Its funny larklog people calling out murder." Witness went over to the next bouse and inquired if any one bad been there. One of the eirla said an old man bad been there a few minutes before, and Crombie had followed him out. Io answer to Mr Bntt, witness said tbe cries proceeded from tbe corner of the feoce close to her cottage. She knew nothing of Black's character, and she had no idea whether the man would take part in a highway robbery or not. Constable Maddern said on Saturday ni;ht, about 10 p.m., a man named Donald M'Gtllvray made a camplalnt to him, and from what he said witness went to the Qaeeo'a Hotel. In tbe passage of tbe hoiel, witness saw tbe accused, and M'Gillvray, who was present, pointed him out as one of the men who bad assaulted and attempted to rob him. Witness arrested Cromble, and brought him out into the passage, when he said, " Dam it; yon need not show me up; there Is nothing In it." Witneis noticed that Grombie's clothes were muddy, and his hat battered in. M'Gillvray, who was perfectly sober, wss bleeding from the nose, and his clothing was muddy, Cromble was also sober. Accused was committed for trial at the next sitting of tbe Supreme Court to be held at Oamarn on tbe 9:h September. | Ball was allowed—accused in LSO and two sureties of L 25 each.
