* lAQUSST. An Inquest upon the body of John Johnson, hotelkeeper, Waitaki South, was held at the Bridge Hotel this morning before Mr H. A. Stratford, Coroner, and a jury of six consisting of Messrs N. O'Toole (foreman), J. Henderson, J. Gray, F. KiDg, J. Wheeler, and D. Prain. William Drew said he had been stableman to Mr Johnson at the Bridge Hotel for the list five weeks. Deceased had been drinking excessively all the time, especially during the last fortnight. He waß some times away from home., About a week ago he was absent from Thursday till Sunday, and returned the worse for drink. Witness had not seen him take anything to eat since he returned. Yesterday, witness Baw deceased at about nine o'clock In the kitchen, when he said " Good morning," and then went outside. Half an. hour afterwards witness went to the stable, and found deceased hanging there by a rope from a beam. His knees were touching the ground. The rope was double, and was wound round his neck. Witness cut him down, and gave an alarm. Deceased was dead ; he was strangled. Dr Stewart said he had seen the body of deceased, and had found the mark of a cord round his kneck. He had no doubt, that he had died from strangulation. Witness would judge from the evidence of the previous witness that deceased was not master of his own actions, and was in all probability insane and suffering from dipsomania. Julia O'Connor said she had been In the service of the deceased for a year and. nine months. Ha was a man . who was always drinking off and on, occasionally knocking it off for a month or two. Once he left off drink for six monthß, and then he broke out again. He had been drinking very hard lately. Efforts had been made to keep the drink from him, but he would have it. He had not been so cheerful as usual lately, and said that bis inside was burning. He did not eat anything. Witness saw deceased In the yard yesterday morning, going towards the stable. He said " Good morning, Julia." That was the last time witness saw deceased alive. The jury then considered their verdict, finding as follows :—The deceased committed suicide by hanging himself when in a state of temporary Insanity caused by excessive drinking.
