(BYIELEGBAPH.) Wellington, May 21. Mr Millar, Secretary of the Maritime Council, has received the following letter from the Railway Commissioners, in answer to the requests preferred by the deputation whioh waited upon the Commissioners last week :—" I have the honor, by the direction of the Railway Commissioners, to inform yon that they hare given the matter careful consideration, and are willing to pay as from the 18 th Jane next the ordinary rate pec hour for casual labor employed at ports, suon rates not to exceed Is 3d per hour for general cargo between the houra of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. With regard to your further suggestion that none but members of the Union should be engaged, I am dlreqted to Bay that the Commissioners will give preference to Union men, but will not guarantee to utilise it exclusively, and they reserve the right to use other hands if necessary.
