GISBORNE HARBOR BOARD IN DIFFICULTIES.
(by telegraph.) Gisborne, Augaat 28. Mr Ball, of Wellington, and Mr do Lautour, the Harbor Board's Bolloitor, have advised that the Board cannot strike a rate under the existing law. The following resolution was agreed to at a Board meeting lest n'ghtßesolved—'fThat in consequence of the Gisborne Amendment Act, ISBB, not belDg expressed bo that the Board oan levy a rate, the Government be notified that the Interest dua la London on the Ist of November proximo reqaires at once to bo remitted, bat that the Board not being In a position to rate has not the funds actually available for the parpose, and asks the Government what la to be done." If the Board had possessed definite powers a rate would have been levied in March last. The amount of interest dua in November 1b L 5119, and a rate would amount to about that sum, and there is L 72.600 (?) available for Interest. The Harbor Board is in a perfeotly solvent condition if only the neoesßary rating powers were given.
