The Government troop 3 having been compelled to leave Muiinu3, took up their quarters in the disirict of Ataa. Tamasese and the bnlk of his people occupied a strong position in the village of Loatoanan, thi3 being the principal fort. Much delay in the proaecation cf the war arose from the late arrival of the Saviian contingent of the Malietoan army, who had deferred their decision aa to which party they should join. They at length enrolled themselves with the Malietoans, and on the 7th and Bth instant the vangaard of Malietoa's army advanced upon the Government forts at Atua. Mataafa hoped that with the advance of the land force. Manori would send hi 3 fleet to sea to meet tho boats of Tamasaae, but Manori was not prepared and did not send out. The land attack was led by a comparatively small force of a few hundred men, and resulted in a heavy loss for the Malietoans, who, however, succeeded in gaining possession of several amall forts.
