THE OAMARU-NASEBY ROAD.
A meeting of the Oamaru-Naseby road Committee was held this afternoon in Mr Sumpter'a office, when there was a large attendance, inoludlng a number of gentlemen from the country. The correspondence haying been read, the matter was pretty fully discussed. Mr P. Aitohiaon expressed the opinion that, the majority of the people in the distriot would be maoh better served by the road going via Maorewhenua, and that it wouldj in addition to being shorter, be mnch more central. Another speaker also advocated the Maerewhenua route. Mr W. Sutherland, jun., said both roads would be very difficult to make, especially the Maerewhenua road, as there were two places through which it would be almost impossible: to make a road that way. The Otekaike route would also be diffioult, and would be a round-abuut way. It was pointed out that the County Council had completely shelved the matter by resolving to have the LSOO in hand before doing anything, as the Government never advances any : money without vouchers accompanied by the Engineer's certificates that the work had been performed. The Committee disclaimed any responsibility as to preventing the money being spent upon finding employment for the unemployed. It was resolved " That, as the Maniototo County Council have expressed themselves in favor of the Livingstone route, this Committee, whilst still believing that the Otekaike route is the only one that is likely to be constructed, will in the meantime not press their decision, but ' will advise that the money be forthwith expended on the Livingstone route, so that the unemployed may at once have work given ;them." It was also resolved that the Committee hold together, and a sub-Committee waa appointed to pay acoounts and attend to small matters.
