SHE FEARED HE WOULD STOP.
Some time ago an action for breach of promise was brought by a young woman residing in the country against a young man who had been keeping oompany with her for a long period. She was subjected to a most severe oross-examination by the counsel, for the defendant, who, as usual with "men of the law" in these oaseSj seemed to take great delight in adding to the confusion of the plaintiff by a number of very inquisitive questions. "You say," questioned the lawyer,' " that the defendant frequently eat very close to yon at your mother's house V "Yes, sir," came the reply with a blush."
"How close?" the oounsel queried. " So olose that one chair was all wo needed to Bit upon." " And you say that he put his arm around you." " No, I didn't." " Then what did you say 1 " " I said he put both his arms around me."
" What then I'' " Ha hugged me." " Very hard ? " "Yes ; bo hard that I waß very nearly screaming out." " Why didn't you scream? " " Because- 1 dido't "(another blush), "Come, that oanhot be the reaaoa. Be explicit, please. Because what 1" " Becauae I was afraid he'd stop ! " The Court exploded, and the learned judge had to be carried oat and placed under the watertap for the purpose of resuscitation.
