SPECIAL CABLE MESSAGES

It is stated that the French squadron in the Mediterranean fired twice at the Italian steamer Solferino when between Genoa and Nice. The French naval authorities state that the firing was accidental. Heavy withdrawals of gold have taken place for shipment to Germany. The Marylebone Cricket Club have declined to endorse the rule laid down by the County Olnbs' conference in reference to the question of I.b.w. Calcutta, March 26. The Minister of Finance estimates a defidt for the year at L 700.000. He assert* that the deficit is caused by the necessity of sotting apart a million for the special defences, which are required to be urgently pushed on.
