GROUNDING OF THE RUAPEHU.
(BY TELEGRAPH.) WELLEicxox, March 26. Tho Raapehu, which arrived here from London, via Hobart, last right grounded off Cape Farewell yesterday morniDg. The particulars, bo far as can be learned, are aa follows : At abom a quarter past eight yesterday moraine, wht-n about eieht or 10 miles north-west of Farewell Spit the ateamer waa felt to touch something and then atop. The engines were immediately reversed, and after a few minutes the vessel was fliated cff. There wbs little or no bumping. The grounding •was more of a sliding motion, which wai so gentle that people dnwn below did not feel anything of it. While the vessol was hanging, soundings were taken, which allowed four fathoms under the bows, and three and a-quarter f*thom3 over the taffrail aft. It is supposed that the steamer grounded on a hummnck of sand, as Ehe seemed to run riyht up on to it, and hang by htr keel aft. At the place where she struck, the chart shows 20 fathoms clear water. Farewell Spit lighthouse waa in plain view at the time. Tne vessel appears to have sustained uo damage whatever, and it is not likely that aha will be docked.
