The stock of tallow in London is 17,800 casks. Constantinople, March 2. The representatives of Servia and Turkey are now agreed as to a method of working the provisions of the Berlin Treaty, and it is believed an agreement will Bhorfcly be signed. [There is evidently some stupid blunder here, for we know of no Duke of Leville, nor is there any Duke in the United Kingdom who is a minor, the youngest Duke being hiß Grace of Newcastle, who was born in 1864.] For the regatta at Rockway, in June, 10,000 dollars have been offered as prize money if Beach will compete. (age specials.) London, February 17. The appeal for aid on behalf of the unemployed in Great Britain has up to the present time been well responded to: The amount of the fund ia now L 40.000. It is hoped that the colonies will contribute towards the relief of the existing distress. An offer of knighthood has been made through Mr Murray Smith to Mr James Service on his retirement from political life. Mr Service has, however, declined to accept the honor. An offer of knighthood has been made to Mr Murray Smith on retiring from the position of AgentGeneral for Victoria, and Mr Smith haa accepted the proffered honor. February 18. The Agents-General for the colonies have decided upon entertaining Mr Smith at a banquet, prior to his departure from London. Mr John B. Gough, the well-known temperance orator, is dead. February 21. Mr Henniker Heaton is moving in the the House of Commons with the view _of arriving at an arrangement under which the colonial forces should ba subject to English control, and be conceded an Imperial status. A proposal has been adopted for laying a duplicate cable between England and Australia, via the Cape of Good Hope. February 24. Mr Howard Spensley, M.P., is preparing a Bill providing for the payment of members of Parliament, which he proposes to introduce into the House of Commons during the present session. AUSTRALIAN. The Legislative Assembly met to-day, and formally adjourned until the 24th ipstant, by which date the Ministerial reelections will be completed. A meeting of Oppositionists, convened by Sir Henry Parkes, was held this morning, at which 20 members attended. Sir Henry Parkes was elected to the post of leader of the Opposition by the meeting, but on entering the Chamber it was • found Sir John Robertson and his party were occupying the front Opposition benches. Sir Henry Parkes and his followers took their seats at the back of Sir John's supporters. Received March 3, at 1.15 a.m. Adelaide, March 2. Crooks, the late manager of the Commercial Bank of South Australia, was brought before the Magistrates to.-day, on the charge of having falsified the account? of the Bank. He pleaded guilty to certain irregularities, but not to the actual charges brought against him. He was finally committed for trial, bail not being asked for. Melbourne, March 2. The betting on the Australian Cup runs as follows :—lsraelite, 4 to 1 ; Sandal, 5 to 1; Minerva, Bto 1; Malua, 10 to 1. The manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Limited, reports on the local grain market as follows : Shipping wheat, hardening tendency, is quoted at 4s 2d per bushel; malting barley, steady, 3s 6d to 4s 3d ; New Zealand oats, no improvement, feed sorts, 2a 8d to 3s ; milling oats aremoderately inquired for at 3a Id to 33 3d ; New Zealand oats, under bond, 23 3d to 2a Gd per bushel. 'The Associated Banks have finally declined to take up the note issue of the Commerctal Bank of South Australia. Adye Douglas) has., tendered his resignation to his Excellency the Governor, who is understood to have summoned . the Hon. Dr Agnew, M.L.C.
