CORRESPONDENCE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE OAHARU" HAIL.
Sir, —Will you kindly inform me what kind of tartan made into a Highland costume the Oamaru Caledonian Society permits to be worn to qualify a competitor to take prizes in the dancing competitions. Sir, my reason for, writing to you is :- At the Caledonian, sports on the Ist and 2nd instant my son wore a Highland costume of Victoria-Stewart tart in. He (my son) was informed by Mr Sutherland that it was useless for him to enter a' competition in that costume, as he would receive no prize. I was under (he impression that any material was suitable. Surely, our Oamaru Society carry the matter to a very fine point. Also, my son's choice of the violin music to which to dance the Sailor's Hornpipe was intended as to disrespect to the national music, but was because- he has never an opportunity of hearing tho bagpipes from one year's; end to the other. I have to thank Mr! Sutherland (one of. the judges) for his: honesty in letting as know the reason why my son could not be a prize-taker. I' think it is time the directors looked into: such matters in order to ascertain if such; injustice is not the cause of so few competitors.—l am, &c, A. KttGOUR.
