WELLINGTON. December 28,

A man utuned William Mitohell was accidentally drowned nt Moutaua, near Foxton, while bathing.

The following telegram was received by the Defence Minister this afternoon : " Wniroa, 28th December.— To Kooti's party of 225 crossed the Mohaka at 7 30 a.m.-to-day. They passed the pah without a word being spoken on either aido. The Arawa chief, who enfercains Te Kooti here, saw Rahana at Petane, who mnrdeied Karaita here long ago. He requested that Rthana should be sent back and not allowed to visit Wairoa, and Ta Kooti sent him back. It ib expected that the party will reach here this ovening. There is no excitement or anxiety whatever. It is unknown whether To Kooti intends going to Poverty Bay yet." A fatal drowning accident occurred in the harbor to-day off Petone. Two lads named Joseph Dodd and' Charles Styles, aged 13 aud 17 years respectively, wore out in a dingy, when the boat capsieed. Dodd was drowned, and Styles wbb rescued, but by what means no information is ytt received. Dodd's body was recovered shortly afterwards. December 29. In compliance with the request of the Native Minister, Te Kooti has decided not to visit Poverty Bay. - DUNEDIN. December 28.

Judge Williams presented medals and certificates of the Royal Humanb Society of Australasia to W. J. C. Miller, Richard Phelan, and Wm. Potiki. Miller and Phelan swam out to save two High School boys on an Island off the Ooeaa Beacb. William Potiki is a Maori, and swam in and saved Mrs Morrioe at Port Molyneux, the Rev. Mr Morrioe being drowned on the same occasion trying to save his wife. In making the presentation his Honor said Richard Phelan had already at different limes saved six persons from drowning at the risk of his own life, and also saved a little girl who was in jeopardy from a runaway horse. The Premier, in moving the vote of thanks to the Mayor, Mr Justice Williams and those present, expressed a hope that we would soon establish a New Zealand branch of the Humane Society. Altogether 109 of the unemployed are now at work.

At the instigation of' the polico, the body of Hazelhurat was exhumed yesterday, and examined by three doctors in the presence of Inspector Fender and Mr Martin, Crown Proseoutor. Portions of the discolored flesh were preserved for further examination. The dootors agreed that the discolorations. were the result of the blows which caused death. A destructive fire oocurred at Oxford this morning, five buildings being burnt to the. ground; The fire broke out In Shannon's bootmaker's shop, and quiokly spread to Dr Reeves' chemist's shop, R, Fisher's general stores, and. Hylond and Woodward's dwelling-houses.', Woodward had a narrow escape of. being suffocated by the smoke, and others had difficulty in escaping. Very little furniture was saved. The brothers, Godfrey and Mrs Howard were brought up at the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day oharged with conspiring to'defraud the Government Insurance Association of LIOOO. The police l obtained a further remand till Saturday. No evidence of.importance waß given. The wife of Mr William Bailey, farmer at Eyreton, died .suddenly this morning, AUCKLAND. December 28. Jameß Hart and Joseph Slater, whila fishing at Tairua, were drowned.by the capsizing of ;a boat. Marion Skelton, aged 25, was drowned at Cambridge while bathing. Arthur Fellows was tramped to death by a horse at Papakura while catching it.

Mrs Einsdean fell down stairs and broke her neck. She is supposed to have been unde the influence of liquor. . The carpenters'strike is practically at ail end, the strikers returning to work.

.NEW PLYMOUTH. Decmber 28.:: > •A report was in circulation in New Plymouth on Saturday that a fracas had occurred at White Cliffs between Tito Kowaru's people and the police. The Taranaki Herald's Urenui correspondent, however, furnishes the following particulars of the affair Tito Kowaru, on arriving at Pakaruhu (White Cliffs) on Thursday, camped his natives on their old spot near the native settlement. ' After pitching their tents, all went up to the Armed Constabulary camp, where Tito Kowaru made a speech, saying they were going to stop there for the night. The natives paraded- about the place, and then went back to their camp. About, sundown a party of about 20 oame back and pitohed a tent on the hill, about fifteen or 20 yards from the blook house. It was quickly pulled down by the civil police, and the natives were told that, none of them would be allowed to camp there. The natives offered no resistence, or violence, but immediately returned to their camps. The party who pitohed the tent,' the Herald's correspondent, stated, are some of Mahaukis* lot (Ngatimaniapoto), who are regular "Te Whi'tis." Several of them walked into the. school room at the Armed Constabulary Camp, but were ordered out. The nativea are on their way back to Parihaka. They; were at Waitara last night, and will probably be through this town to-day.

BALOLUTHA. December 28. On Christmas or Boxing . night. two doßperate attempts were made to break into Mackenzie and Go's stores. Two strong iron bolts were wrenched off and the locks broken. An entrance, was, however, prevented by a stable fork having been placed against the door inside.

INVERCARGILL. Decetnber 28. At the lliverton regatta to-day asculling match took place between Harrington and Boniface, a local oarsman. Harrington conceded a minute over a three and a half-mile course. Harrington, who, it will be remembered, lost his chanoe in tho race with Hearn last year over the same course through fouliDg a sunken, fence, on this occasion broke a a'cull,'arid of course had to give up. He accuses Boniface of being the cause,of the acoident by fouling him. A fire at Pukerau this morningdestroyed the stable of F.' M* Dawson, with four horses and all its contents.
