London, June 9. i The debate on the financial proposals of the Government was brought to a close at an early hour this morning, when a division was taken with the result that the Budget was rejected by a majority of twelve, notwithstanding that Mr Gladstone had announced that the Government would make its acceptance a Cabinet question. An amendment proposed by Sir Michael Hicka-Baach condemning the proposed increase in duty on beer and spirits was then carried. In consequence of the adverse vote the resignation of Ministers is expected. In the House of Commons yesterday, Lord Edmund Fitzmaurice, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, stated that Government hoped for a renewal of the negotiations with Spain for a commercial treaty between the two countries. Constantinople, June 9. Intelligence from Crete states that the Christian officials on the island have resigned their positions, owing to the appointment of Sovas Pasha as Governor. Diilon Bell, Agent-General for New Zealand," has explained to Lord Derby the compromise suggested by Mr Griffiths, Premier of Queensland, in the Federation Enabling Bill. In connection with the floating of the Adelaide loan, the question has been raised in the oity whether repayment will be made upon demand by the bondholders, or whether it will be at the option of the Government. Sir Arthur Biyth, Agent-General for South Australia, replies that the former will be the method of repayment. The difficulty which had arisen in connection with the establishment of an Anglo-Spanish treaty on the question of greater concessions being granted in admitting Spanish wines to England, will probably be amicably settled. In the House of Commons Sir Michael Hicks Beach's motion condemning the budget proposals of the Government came on for discussion. Mr Gladstone said the budget question would mean the life or death of the Government. Mr Childers, Chancellor of the Exchequer, charged the Tories with opposing concessions to the colonies. Some excitement was caused during the debate by the Parnellites jumping upon the seats and endeavoring to speak. On the division beiDg taken the-motion was carried by 264 to 252. The defeat of the Government was juite unexpected. The Redistribution of Seats Bill ,has been passed by the House of Lords. The claim put forward by Germany t the town of St. Lucia, on the sea coast of 1 Northern Zululand, and which was re cently annexed by Great Britian, has been withdrawn. • It is reported that the town of Kassala has fallen into the the rebels. The French Chamber of Deputies has adopted the serutin dc liste. The new dredge built for the Mel* bourne Harbor Board has had a highly satisfactory trial. Mr Gladstone 'stated in the Home of Commons that it would be premature to assert that the war difficulty with Rusbl& had passed. In consequence of the action of the Sultan of Zanzibar in opposing the pro* tectorate recently established by Gar« many over the territory to the northward of Zanzibar, it is expeoted that that town will be bombarded by the German wat | vessels at present in the neighborhood.
