It has been decided to hold a citizens' ball to the rifle representatives in the Garrison Hall on the evening of the 10th inst. The list of stewards is an influential one, and is headed by his Honor Judge Williams and his Worship the Mayor. The Otago Art Society's anhual exhibition of pictures will be opened on Saturday afternoon next. It is stated that the exhibits, which are numerous, manifest a marked improvement on any previous exhibition, and include pictures from artists in different parts of the colony, who have not hitherto contributed any of their works to the Society for exhibition. ; The Secretary of tho Otago Anglers' Association received the following telegram to-day from Mr Stoddart, President of the Otago Anglers' Association, at present in Christchurch :—"ln two days' fishing in the Selwyn, caught 22 trout, weighing 801b." Novembor 3. It is reported that Bela Singer, merchant, has called a meeting of his creditors. His liabilities are said to be L 15.000, The National Insurance Company's balance-sheet shows a net income of L 146.369, to which is added L 3287 balance from last year. The losses were L 90,279, and tho working expenses, &c., L 30,833 ; leaving a surplus on the year's transactions of L 28,544. The usual dividend was declared. CHRISTCHURCH. Novembor 2. A new system of electric fire alarms, and the chemical fire engine, are to be tested to-morrow for the first time. There was a capital show at Rangiora to-day—the. best yet held, particularly in cattle and sheep. AUCKLAND. November 2. Sailed Manapouri, for tho South. Among her passengers is Sir James Duke, Bart., of Langton, Sussex, who is travelling through the colonies with his tutor. He is a nephew of Mr Alfred Bennett, of this city. The Selection Committee to-day chose the following as the team for the southern cricketing tour: Arneil, Barton, Blair, Buckland, Duffaur. Gill, Lankham, Mumford, O'Brien, Robinson, Testro, and Yates. ' Some alterations may yet take place before starting. MASTERTON. November 3. At Brancepets, yesterday, a bush faller named James Duncan, aged 18, had his leg crushed by a falling tree. He was removed to the Masterton hospital, where he died this morning from the shock to his nervous system. NAPIER. November 3. Captain Newman, an old settlor, died yesterday. A committee has been formed to get up competitive matches at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Fire Brigade Association, at Napier next January. It is hoped that sufficient amount in subscriptions will be raised to offer such substantial prizes so as to invite colonial brigade's to send up strong representative teams.
