A grand and impressive ceremony was performed to-day at St. Peter's, the occasion being the canonisation of four eminent deceased member of the Church of Rome. The rites of were performed by Pope Leo, and the proceedings were marked with great splendour and brilliance. His Holiness, whose health has for a long time past been most unsatisfactory, continues in a very feeblo state, and was only able with difficulty to take part in the day's proceedings, Paris, December 9.
Intelligence is to hand from Tunis that the French troop 3 have of late been everywhere successful over the insurgents, a remnant of whom are now only left. These are retreating to the frontier of Tripoli, and the French troops are in pursuit. Constantinople, December 9.
A force of Turkish troops has been despatched from Tripoli to the frontier to protect it against the retreating rebels.
FIRE AT A THEATRE IN VIENNA.
UPWARDS OF 300 PERSONS BURNT
TO DEATH.
Vienna, December 9,
A disastrous conflagration, accompanied | with immense loss of life, occurred last night in this city. During a performance at the King (sic) Theatre," a lighted lamp fell on the Btage, which at once ignited. The fire spread with ?reat rapidity, and the fames soon blocked all means of exit from the building. Sixty persons leaped from the windows into extended articles of clothing held by others in the streets below, and were saved. The majority of those in the theatre were, however, unable to pscape,. and were burnt to death. Over 300 corpses have, up to the present time, been extricated from the ruins of the building, which has been completely gutted.
