The weather was again glorious for the Oarnaru Jockey Club's races to-day, but the attendance w.as not so large as might have been expected. This was partly owing- to the fact that the regular hplidays are near at hand. The racing was, as yesterday, only moderately good. The Rifles' Band again enlivened the proceedings with some very good music. At 10 minutes after the advertised time the first event on the programme was started, and resulted in the most exciting event of the meeting. The following is a detailed account .of the running : Handicap Hordle Race, of 50 sovs. Two miles, over eight flights of hurdles. Mr. Lunii's b g Robin Hood, Sst 41b (Clifford) 1 Mr. Schluter's b g Little John, 6 yrs, 9st (Cornelius) 2 Mr. Maitland's b g Shillelagh, aged, Sst 91b (Hobb) 3 Clarence and Levant were scratched. At the start Milo jumped off with the lead, closely followed by Little John and Shillelagh, Robin Hood goinn easily some lengths in the rear. In this order the first two hurdles were taken, all the horses taking the j mnps well. At the third hurdle Shillelagh had closed upon Little John, and the pair took the next couple of hurdles. G-oing round the back of the course, the quartette closed up, and the next jump was taken almost in a cluster. At the fifth hurdle Robin Hood-' was on level terms with the leader, Little John having fallen back to last place, Robin Hood now showed that he meant business by rushing away to the front, and coming round to the last two jumps there was little room for doubt as to the result. Mr. Lunn's horse was landed a winner, with Little John, still full of running, second, Shillelagh third, and Milo last. Time—4min. 32sec.
