WELLINGTON. December 6. At the Appeal Court this afternoon, the case Regina v. M'Kay was heard, and the conviction quashed. M'Kay had been convicted at Dunedin for setting fire to a dwelling-house, but after argument the Judges held the place was not a house, it having been removed from one site to another, and still remaining on skids. The Government have decided to amalgamate the Accountants' offices in the Postal and Telegraphic Departments. The meeting at Te Awahiiitu on Saturday to protest against the withdrawal of the proclamation on the Patetere Block turned out the opposite of what its promoters calculated. Those who signed the requisition did not turn up. The following resolution was carried : —" This meeting is of opinion that Government be respectfully requested to withdraw the proclamation from Patetere Block, and, leave purchase free to the Patetere Laud Company or to private parties."
