The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency have received advices by the mail that Money Wigram's steamship Northumberland is loading for Wellington, and is to sail for this port direct to-morrow (21st October). Information hag be«jn received by Government that Mr. Vesey Stewart had paid to the Agent-General in London a deposit of L3OOO, which was required under the regulations for the Te Puke Special Settlement, and that the first party of settlers were to leave London in the Lady Jocelyn for Auckland on the 2,5 th of last month. The Lady jocelyn was to be followed by the Himalaya, also with special settlers far Mr. Stewart, on the 25th inst. RUNEDIN. October gQ. The Tuapaka times has beep informed on reliable authority that a saving is being effected on the permanent way alone of the Invercargill section of railway of L3OOO yearly. The Chief Postmaster states that no arrangements have been made for detaining the outward Suez mail. October 21. Inspector Buckley, of Christchurch, will take charge of the Southland Police District, and Inspector Pender will remain in Timaru. The Diocesan Synod will probably decline to endorse the resolution of the General Synod in favor of grants to denominational schools, but will pass a resolution urging increased facilities for religious teaching. The report about finding tho body of Vennell was quite unfounded. LYTTELTON. October 21. Arrived—Rotomahana. She brings 27 merino rams from Adelaide, for Mr. R. Wilkin, Christchurch, and Mr. Johnston, Kaihika ; also, a number of thoroughbreds from the Albion Stud, Tasmania, for sale here. NAPIER. October 20. Some rich quartz has come from a mine recently opened at Mohaka, though whether it is in payable quantities is not yet known. NELSON. October 20. The centenary of Sunday schools was celebrated here to-day, when the proceedings were most successful. About 2000 children walked in procession through the town, accompanied by two bands. On assembling at the Botanical Gardens, the children sang and were addressed by the Bishop of Nelson, Sir William Fox, and several of the clergy. There was a very large attendance of adults. TIMARU. October 21. A Farmers' Co-operative Association is being agitated by public lectures, and promises to be a big success. The booth privileges at the Timaru Agricultural Show fetched LIOO. Annie Mitchell, aged seventeen, a recent arrival from Oamaru, was sentenced to fourteen days for stealing apparel belonging to a hotel cook.
