His medical advise? recommended a change of climate, and in purguanpe of this reco.inniepdation, application has been made to government for twelve monthg leave of absence. If aucoessful, Mr. Mansfield proposes taking a trip to England. An official telegram from the camp says that the usual number of natives carrying fencing material came down this morning, but turned back before reaching the rosd. October 12. Mr. Mansford has received twelve months' leave of absence, and visits England. It is understood that he will draw full pay. DUNEDIN", October-11, Messrs, Daniel Douglas McDonald and Fred. Fitchett, M.A., L.L.8., have passed the solicitors' aud barristers' examination respectively. October 12. Mr. Proctor finds himself unable to go to Oamaru without a guarantee. A meeting is to be held on Thursday to form a company to construct a railway from the Hurunui to Reefton. Last week the Benevolent Society relieved only 17 persons. Three men haye been arrested, and another wilj probably be arrested thja afternoon, A man named Charles Johnston after being ejected from the City Hotel last .night, kicked the door in. Messrs. W. 0. Sheppard and H. Coullan the barman, seized him, intending to give him into custody, when he drew a knife and inflicted fjesh wounds on both. He was subsequently arrested by the police. AUCKLAND. Qctober 11. Sailed Cilanaman, brigantjne, for Oamaru. Captain Worsp, surveyor for the United Insurance Associations, returned tc-day from a visit to the wreck of the brigantine James ; A. Stewart, at Kaipara Heads, Captain Worsp reports the wreck lyipg oMtgiclg the Hefidaj about $1 miles north of the pilot station. He roda to the place, and while going along he saw a boat with the keel and portion of the stern knocked away. Inside the boat was a lifebuoy, which the Maoris had found floating near ic. He was also informed that a bundle of clothes, which froir} the description probably belonged to the captain, was also found about the same spot. Had the crew stuck to the vessel they would have been perfectly safe. Those who saw the ship strike state that they did.not observe any boat leave, and they set out fjfc qnce for - the- bgaph s>pd ljghted. a fire there to attraot the attention of any oastaway. The vessel came ashore on the -beach after dark, and • was at once boarded, but the only living creature found was a cat. The frying-pan was standing with the meat just as the cook had left it, and every? t-hjng appeared to he undisturbed.
