THE NEW RAILWAY TARIFF.
We have been at some pains to work out a comparative statement of the charges from and to various stations under the old and new railway tariffs as affecting the various stations in this district. Wei have also added thereto comparative statements relative to the ports of Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, and Timaru in regard to districts in which those ports are likely to be brought into competition with Oamaru, and in order to make the matter clearer we insert a comparative statement of the old cost and the probable new cost of sending agricultural produce by water carriage from Oamaru. We have selected agricultural produce and wool as the items for comparison, but it may be mentioned that in all classes of goods there are proportionate increases in the rates.
The Railway Department in each case charges 3d per bale for loading and 3d for unloading, where the work is done by the department, but this does not effect the relative oharges by rail and by sea.
