to her running in the Cup. It was soon set by an adept close by, and is now all right. Almost all the horses that ran at Whare-Kuri were again present, except Emerald, to' measure strides, the additional horses being conspicuous in the grand old horse Unknown, who, I Wtts sorry to see not in the "pink of condition. " Bella and Tichborno, also, lacked condition. But notwithstanding this thev ran game horses withal. The ball was opened by Belle carrying off the Maiden easily, beating Paddy and four others whilst the Maid of Waitaki won a grancl race from Unknown and threo others f l)r the Ctip. The Shepherds' Race was won by Magician, after a grand contest, from Bella and another. Actress won a go o ,j race, beating Tichborne and fivo others in the Hack Race, and Charlie, in tho Trot, added another win from four others notwithstanding his starting from scratch' Honest Jack won a splendid race in the Consolation from Unknown, and deserves the cognomen of " Consolation Jack," as this is his second win tl»is year, and h<j. won the Consolation Race at Whare-Kuri last year. The programme was carried out to the letter, and reflects credit on tho officers appointed, who did their utmost to make the meeting a success. Maiden Plate—Llo. Mr. Gunn's Belle (A. M'Kav) ,, t 1 Mr. Cairn's Paddy (W. Smith) o Mr. M'Kinnon's The Rake (Green) ... 3 Six horses ran. At the fall of the fW Paddy jumped off with the lead, but at the half-mile post Belle collared him, andi the pair ran together to the straight, when Belle made her effort, and won by & length, the others being two leiiirtha behind Paddy. . Otematata Cup 1-landtcap —L2O. Mr. Cairn's Maid of Waitaki (M'Kay\ 1 Mr. Hill's Unknown (W. M'Kay) , ' J Mr. Lefevre's Honest Jack (Green.) ... 3 Four hoi-ses started. Magician did not accept. Mr. Beattie sont them away to a good start, when the Maid assumed command, closely followed by Unknown and •Tack to the throe-quartor mile flag, whon Unknown and Jack pushed up to tho. Maid, and the trio ran locked together to the straight. The Maid then forged hor head in front, and the riders drew their whips, a grand race ensuing. Despite the efforts of W. M'Kay, he could not get within a couple of lengths of the Maid. This was the best contested race of the meeting. Shepheuds' Race—HO. Mr. Gunn's Magician (A. M'Kay) , 1 Mr. Smith's Bella (W. M'Kay) 2 Mr. Munro's Biddy M'Kay (Munro) 3 Three ran. A splendid start was effected. Magician was quickest on his pins, and cut out the running to tho three-quarter mile post, and Bella crept up to him, and raced neck and nock to the straight, but her condition told on her, and Magician won by a length. Hack Race—-L6. Mr. Robertson's Actress (Owner) ... J. Mr. M'Lean's Tichborne (A. M'Kay) 2: Mr. Stoddart's Peter Simple (Smith) 3. Seven , ran. After a few false starts a. good one was made, when Actress scorodi the first heat. The second heat was woiii by Tichborno, from Pukaka, by a head„ and the Claimant lost by a length tha deciding heat. Trotting Race Handicap—L7. Mr. Sutherland's Charlie, scratch • (Grant) ... ... ... ... j Mr. Smith's Ranger, 400 yards (Qreon) 2 Mr. Sutherland's Maori, 500 yard? (M'Kiunon) ... 3 Five ran. A fair starfc was effected, and before half a mils was traversed Ranger passed Maori,, and Charlie soon gave Darkie the gtx-by, and at the halfmile he passed and came homo an easy winner. Convocation Race—Lß. Mr. Lefovre's Honest Jack (A. M'Kay) 1 Mr. Hill's Unknown (W. M'Kay) ... 2 Two ran. Aa usual a good start was made, and resulted as above. This race brought a most successful meeting to a close. After each and all had done ample justice to a well-spread table, which was. simply Al, reflecting credit on Mr. and' Mrs. Munro, the settling up was ono of the best we have seen in the districtAfter a good few bottles of champagne* were disposed of, and the health of tho: host and hostess was drunk, tho mooting; broke up.
