Members of the Ministry intend taking a brief holiday after the labors of the session; Major Atkinson leaves for Taranaki to-night. Messrs. Eolleston, Dick, and Whitaker go south to-morrow.
Further evidence was taken in the Hospital inquiry, which will probaply ponplude to-morrow.
The Council of the New Zealand Rifle Association have concluded its sittings. The accounts for the last year show a debit balance,-mainly on account of the paucity of subscriptions. The Government has obtained a vote of LSOO for the Association, with which the Council hope to be able to have another meeting at Nelson. The programme for the next events lias been prepared, showing a total prize list of over L6OO, in addition to matches in which the ontrance fees will be divided. The company matches have been improved, the first prize in s each being a cup and L 25. A new match for a trophy has been introduced, to be shot by one representative from each company. Intimation has been received from Melbourne that one-sixth more space than was originally allotted has, at the request of the Executive Commissioner, Dr. Hector, been given by the Melbourne Exhibition Commissioners for the extension of the New Zealand court at the Melbourne Exhibition,

Arrived —Anne Melhuish, barque, from ;Newcastle. On the 26fch ult., a, passenger named Thomas Tynan jumped overboard and was drowned.. Every endeavor was made to rescue him, but unsuccessfully. ''

Both north and south there is much grumbling from the smaller towns at the way in which they are treated. September 2. t The [master of the schooner Kauri reports the loss of his vessel during last night on the rocks lying on the outside of Waiheke. It was loaded with logs at the time. The Kauri wa3 a new vessel, having been built some months ago by Ware and Brown, for the Auckland Timber Company, by whom she was owned. Qrilv two witnesses were examined at the Hospital enquiry, before i>r. Skae. They were Dr. Poison, and Good, the late night nurse. Brown, the former head nurse,! declined to attend, and other witnesses who were concerned in the affair are all away from the Hospital. The enquiry was confined to the circumstances attending the dismissal of Good. The demand for Bay of Islands coal continues to increase. No less than six Steamers called in during last week, taking away a thousand tons of coal, i Mr. Hall, a cooper, resident in Penrose district, went into his. paddock this morning to remove a calf from a cow, when she savagely attacked him. Hall is 70 years; old. He was knocked down by the rush of the cow, which then trampled on him, and attempted v ,to gore Mm, A neighbor, who observed the occurrence," at once ran to the assistance, of . the unfortunate man, but he had considerable difficulty in driving ' off the infuriated cow. Dr. Scott, on examining him, found that several ribs had been broken, and perforated the 'lungs; from which air was 'escaping. He held out no hop ß of •recovery. Superintendent Thompson has investigated the circumstances of the late unwarranted arrest of: Mr. Samuel Brown and his companions on the barque Glimpse. He has dealt with the arresting constables and. non-commissed officer concerned in such a way ais-will 'effectually.prevent, the recurrence of such a lamentable error of judgment. 1 " Mr. Garrard interviewed some of the 4upfeland members to-day relative to the unemployed, and invited them to an open air meeting of unemployed to-morrow. Mr. P. K. M'Caughan, M.H.R. for -Riverfcon, has been invited to a banquet at Winton in the -course of a few days. The secretary to the Banquet Committee, writing to Mri duqt since you have been our representative has given the greatest amount of satisfaction, and has largely added to the number of your supporters. A numerously signed requisition has been presented to Mr. J. P. Joyce, formerly member for Wallace, asking him to contest the Waikaia seat.
