THE RAILWAY EMPLOYEES AND REDUCTION OF PAY.

(by telegraph.)

(per press association.)

Dunedin, September 1. It is stated that a graduated scale of pay and promotion, to apply to all persons employed in the railway department, is being prepared* and that it is likely to meet the wishes of disaffected employes. The Star has authority for saying that Mr. Conyers'' telegram, posted at Christchurch yesterday re railway pay, was cancelled several days ago. The new soale of wages to be introduced into the department will certainly take ten per cent, off all the officers down to the station-masters, but it is expected that it will scarcely affect day-men, porters, and surface hands. Mr. Oliver telegraphs that if it is intended to reduce the wages of the hands due notice shall be given.
