FATAL ACCIDENT.
A distressing fetal accident occurred yesterday ait the stone quarry at" Xaipo," near Reidston, by which M?< Peter Stewart, a gentleman long and favorably known in Oamarq, and a partner of Mr. Monro, of Dunedin, lost his life, : It ap* peara that the deceased in company with a man named John Halcet were engaged removing a steam crane, . Deceased mounted the top of the legs of the orane to remove, a bolt. Having effected this, the legs gave a sudden lurch, causing the deceased to lose his seat. He was thrown several feet in the air, and then fell to the ground, a distance of nearly 20 feet. He struck heavily against a portion of thej timber work of the crane and some piled up closely. From this hg feU on to the rock and rolled Into a pool of water. He was U P- to a state, of insensibility. Everything was done that could possibly be done under the circumstances, Deceased, after lingering for three, hours, expired, and ;hia body wag removed to a privatehouseatßeidston. Mr. W.Dixon promptly brought the news into town, and Dr. Garland went, to the scene, but [ before he arrived Mr. Stewart had died,. , It; has not been deemed necsssapv ta inquest. alrwav stated the degeaged W' well-known inOamaru. f[p hsd resided nere many years, and was nown as 9, steady, sober, and industrious . man. .M r * S.tewart was unmarried and 46 years of age. He was a native of Perthshire, Scotland, and had be?n X 7 year* in thp Colpny.
