FATAL ACCIDENT.

A distressing fetal accident occurred yesterday ait the stone quarry at" Xaipo," near Reidston, by which M?< Peter Stewart, a gentleman long and favorably known in Oamarq, and a partner of Mr. Monro, of Dunedin, lost his life, : It ap* peara that the deceased in company with a man named John Halcet were engaged removing a steam crane, . Deceased mounted the top of the legs of the orane to remove, a bolt. Having effected this, the legs gave a sudden lurch, causing the deceased to lose his seat. He was thrown several feet in the air, and then fell to the ground, a distance of nearly 20 feet. He struck heavily against a portion of thej timber work of the crane and some piled up closely. Everything was done that could possibly be done under the circumstances, Deceased, after lingering for three, hours, expired, and ;hia body wag removed to a privatehouseatßeidston.
