August 30. Arrived-Endeavor, brigantine, from Oamaru.
Cleared out—lsabella Pratt, for Havelock. The schooner Cora, bound from Pelprus Sound to Oamaru, put ill to Wellington for gheltp-f. August 31.
Eleven entries have as yet teen received for the 24 hours' pedestrian matoh to be held here on the 10th and 11th proximo. The principal are Brooks and Delaney, Dunedin ; Swan, Christchurch ; Webber, Wellington ; Neary, Wanganui; and O'Connor, Timaru. DUNEDIN. August 30. Captain Rapp, of the_ barque Italy, lately arrived from Port Jisperance, Tasmania, was brought up at the City Police Court this morning, charged with smuggling oppossum rugs. He was lined LIOO, mitigated to L 25. A meeting of the railway employes was held at Lawrence station on Sunday evening to take into consideration the present action of the Government in reducing the wages 10 per cent. The following, resolusion was unanimously carried :—' • That this meeting thinks it unfair and unjust for the Government to reduce 10 per cent, off salaries, pay, and wages, and this meet* ing unanimously pledges itself to abide by the decision arrived at by the Dunedin and Christchuroh meetings." August 31. Calph's tannery at Kaikorai was burned down on Sunday. It was insured in the Transatlantic for L2OO. Mr. Bathgate, in retiring from the bench to-day, received a farewell address from the bar. He said, in reply, while Gircußigtances in connection with his retirement were npi as yet satisfactory to, him, he had not any reason to Qomplainof his relations to the bar. Mr. Simpson succeeds him as Resident Magistrate. CHRISTCHURCH. . August 30. The number of student? in the Agricultural Sptfool promises to be go large that the Committee hag reqommpnded additions to the homestead buildings. August 31The body of a man named George Willcox was found on the bank of the Waimakiriri, near-Oxford, yesterday. The Government have forwarded instructions to have the quarantine station at Ripa Island, Lyttelton, got ready for the . next batch of Maori prisoners. It is stated that there'will probably bs> about 400 in all sent to Lytteiton. 1 AUCKLAND. August 80. The Hinemoa arrived in the Manukau this afternoon with a number of members J of Assembly, also a number of Armed | Constables for Taranaki. NEW PLYMOUTH. August 31. At the R.M. Court this morning a case (Revell v. Shaw) excited some interest. The defendant is in Wellington discharging the "duties of R.M. and District Judge, having changed with Mr. Mansford, who came here for a few months from Wellington on account of his health. Judge Shaw applied to the court to obtaqi an ex parte heaping of the case in Wel : lington. The solicitor for the plaintiff objected, as the adjournment was solely for the purpose of delay. The R.M. said it was a delicate position to be placed in, but decided that an ex parte statement could be made in Wellington on the lOfch September, and adjourned the case until the evidence had been sent up.
