(reuter's telegram per press association.) Calcutta, August 17. Intelligence has be.en received from Afghanistan that a large body of Pathens attacked the British Garrison at Kachmadan. but were repulsed and

pursued, and severe loss was inflicted on them. August 18. Further information to hand states that Ayoob Khan is now engaged bombarding Candahar, and the British forces are acting on the defensive. News comes to hand that the citadel at Candahar is invested on three sides by Ayoob Khan's army. General Stewart reports that he has l'eached Gandamuk with the British force which was left at Cabul after _General Roberts' departure for Candahar, and the evacuation of Cabul is now completed.
