(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. August 9. A carbine match was lired to-day between a team from H.M.S. Dante and the Wellington Naval Brigade, and resulted in a victory for the latter, The ship Benvue cleared for London to-day with a cargo valued at L 56,130. DUNEDIN. August 8. About 150 persons attended a meeting of unemployed this morning. Two motions were carried—one to petition the Government to stop immigration at once, and the other to petition the United States Government to aid the working classes here in going to America. Both motions were carried unanimously, but the meeting terminated without any steps being taken to draw up the petitions. Two Chinamen have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in tlje Eyer burn murder.
CHPvISTCHUPvCH. August 10. A householder at Sydenham has been fined LlO for knowingly letting two houses to women of ill-fame. The City Council has at last got a credit balance at the bank. When this was announced at the meeting last night there was great applause. A gang of five men left yesterday for the jOkarito" diggings. John Murphy has been committed for trial on two charges of perjury and forgery. The Star last night, on the authority of letters from workmen, says :— '"* The complaints from the Weka Pass railway works, where the unemployed were sent, appear to have emanated from very few of the men employed. The men, on the whole, conduct themselves tolerably well, but among several hundred there are sure to be a few who, for misconduct or other reasons, have to be dismissed. These on coming to town spread the reports, which are, to say the best, exaggerated. The only real grievance discovered was that at Weka Pass. The Government men were at one time caarged lid per diem more for rations than the"' neighboring contractor was charging his men. TJpjon this being discovered, the grievance was immediately redressed. The report of the Benevolent Association shows that there i" still a go'.'d deal of distress. Ninety-three persor.s wer<rt'lieved last week. At the meeting of the Lyttelton Harbor Board yesterday, the Improvement Com-
mittee brought up a report of their negotiations -with the contractors, Messrs. Ware and Jones for the dock extension. The Committee recommend the Board to accept the contractors' offer of extension of 50 feet. The report was adopted. A u-k'»r;uu from the Secretary of the Marine Department was read, stating that Mr. Blackett had approved of the plan. The whole matter will be submitted for the approval of the Governor oh Tuesday.
AUCKLAND. August 9. The body of a man was found floating in the harbor. It has not yet been identified. At first it was believed to be that of Cassels, a settler of Waiheka. Wheeler, for throwing rotten eggs at an entertainment at Hamilton, was mulcted in L 9 fine and costs. The fine is approved as putting down larrikinism. Several sporting gentlemen are doubtful about the statement of five hares having stripped five hundred trees, in five visits to Bowman's nursery unless they had ocular demonstration of the fact. August 10. The vessel anchored ashore atTutukuku is the topsail schooner Julia Price. Anchors, &c., are being sent down to get her off. LYTTELTON. August 10. The Hinemoa arrived yesterday .with 44 Maori prisoners, who were marched to gaol singing and gesticulating all the way. On their arrival they were addressed by Te Whetu who advised good behavior. TIMARU. August 10. The report submitted at the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club last evening showed the receipts for the year to be L 1364, and that the financial position of the Club is satisfactory. Four men were excavating clay at a brickyard near town this morning, when a heavy fall of earth took place and. two of them were completely buried. They were immediately dug out by their comrades, and Dr. Hoff, who happened to be at hand, pronounced their injuries so slight that their removal to the Hospital would not be necessary, BLENHEIM. August 9. At an inquest held this afternoon on the body of Thomas Q'Sullivan, found in the Taylor River yesterday, a verdict of " found drowned" was returned. Deceased attended early mass at the Catholic Church yesterday, and during the morning the abstinence pledge was administered by the.priest.
