OUR NEW GOVERNOR.

Although Sir Hercules Robinson is one of the best Governors the Colony has ever had, Sir Arthur Gordon, the youngest son of the fourth. Earl of Aberdeen, who will succeed him in about three weeks, possesses a reputation that gives promises of something still better. Sir Arthur Gordon has held gubernatorial appointments for 20 years. He was secretary to his father when he held the reins of government during the Crimean War. From the moment that he entered public life lie has been associated with the most brilliant intellects. All Ehe celebrated men on the Liberal side of the British Parliament, from the present leader downwards, have been the friends of his earlier life. When difficulties arose in Fiji he was elected Governor of that place and High Commissioner of Polynesia, and the able manner in which he performed the duties of these important offices hap y/on universal admiration and respect. He is a man that cannot be bought. His career lias been irreproachable, and what is likely to be advantageous to this Colony is, that he is death on land-sharking. The news of his appointment, we are told, lv:s created feelings of disappointment in the- minds of the Government and their supporters, <ut i- ! h'-s revived the hopes of the Li:.'er.-\1 party, it is said that Sir Hercules Robinson has been the chief adviser to the Mini try iu periods of political difficulty. The new Governor, it is believed, would not be approachable for such a purpose, and certainly not by a Conservative Government. Two years ago, when Sir Arthur Gordon was on his way to Fiji, lady Gordon and her two daughters passed two months at Ivawau, as the guests of Sir George Grey.
